Memory in Olive Wood

Guido Dettoni della Grazia used to say that each material was a different garment for the same work of art. In this special MARIA – In Memoriam edition, that garment is centuries-old olive wood from Umbria, a tree that, since the story of Noah’s Ark, has symbolized peace, reconciliation, and hope.

MARIA – In Memoriam was created as a tribute to the life, work, and spiritual legacy of Guido Dettoni della Grazia. That this work has been crafted from centuries-old Umbrian olive wood—a land where Guido found one of the places in which his creative vision reached some of its deepest expressions, and where he chose to leave an essential part of his artistic and spiritual legacy—gives this edition a particularly profound meaning.

Each piece belongs to a selection of multiples chosen by the artist himself and embodies the qualities that define a Special Edition: the nobility of centuries-old olive wood, the exceptional craftsmanship of its carving and finishing, Guido Dettoni della Grazia’s original signature, and the M, the distinguishing mark of this In Memoriam edition. The 14 cm pieces are signed and numbered; the 8 cm pieces, conceived to almost disappear within the hands that hold them, bear the artist’s signature and the M as the identifying marks of the edition.

The M carries two inseparable meanings: M for Maria and M for Memory. It expresses the desire to keep Guido’s memory alive through one of the most representative works of his artistic journey.

Because art transcends time only when it becomes a shared memory.
